Why Socialism and Communism Are Spiritually and Socially Harmful: A Biblical Reflection from Latin America

Growing up as an immigrant in the United States, I was deeply influenced by ideals of fairness, compassion, and respect, values I believed were synonymous with leftist politics. Watching CNN, I often associated justice with socialism and viewed left leaning parties as the “good guys” fighting for the little guy.

But with time and especially as I matured, left the U.S., and came back to Latin America.. my eyes opened. What I once saw as “social justice” was often just political rhetoric, and more importantly, a worldview that contradicts the Word of God.

Today, at 42 years old, I live fully committed to the teachings of Jesus Christ, and from that lens, it’s painfully clear: socialism and communism are spiritually deceptive systems that destroy societies from the inside out. They promise paradise but lead to poverty, oppression, and moral decay.

“Woe to those who call evil good and good evil.” — Isaiah 5:20

Why So Many Latinos Flee Leftist Nations

It’s common to hear people in the U.S. praise socialism as compassionate, but many forget why millions of Latinos risk their lives to flee countries like Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua.

Unfortunately, there is a massive confusion especially among young people and Western progressives or older confused people which really do not understand what socialism really is by binge consuming CNN for years, who think socialism is simply about having free healthcare, free education, women’s rirghts, etc.. They confuse actual socialism with capitalist nations that offer social programs.

Yes, Germany gives financial support to families, Canada has universal healthcare, and Norway offers free education, but these are capitalist countries with strong economies, built on free markets, private property, and innovation. They have social benefits because they generate wealth through capitalism, not because they practice socialism.

“The simple believes everything, but the prudent gives thought to his steps.” — Proverbs 14:15

People fall into this trap out of ignorance and lack of discernment. They hear “free healthcare” and assume that must be socialism. But what they’re really praising is a healthy capitalist system that uses its prosperity to care for its citizens.

The kind of socialism that Latin Americans flee from is not the kind that gives you “free stuff.” It’s the kind that steals your business, silences your voice, destroys your currency, takes your property away, jails your pastors, and tells you what you can and can’t believe.

These aren’t random failed states. These are nations crushed under the weight of socialism and communism. In the name of “equality,” their governments have stolen freedom, destroyed economies, and driven their own people into hunger and despair.

“You will know them by their fruits.” — Matthew 7:16

Socialism may sound noble—but the fruit is always rotten.

How Socialism Contradicts the Bible

1. It rejects personal responsibility.

“The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, while the soul of the diligent is richly supplied.” — Proverbs 13:4
The Bible honors hard work. Socialism punishes it, redistributing what the diligent earn to those who often do nothing.

2. It feeds envy and class hatred.

“You shall not covet… anything that is your neighbor’s.” — Exodus 20:17
“Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.” — Galatians 5:26

Marxism is built on division: rich vs poor, oppressed vs oppressor. But Scripture calls us to unity and gratitude, not resentment.

3. It makes government God.

“You shall have no other gods before Me.” — Exodus 20:3
“My God will supply every need of yours…” — Philippians 4:19

In communism, the state becomes your provider, your judge, and your master. This is idolatry. Only Christ is Lord.

4. It suppresses God-given freedom.

“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.” — Galatians 5:1
“Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” — 2 Corinthians 3:17

God designed people to be free, not to be controlled by an authoritarian regime or micromanaged by bureaucrats.

My Journey: From Leftist Sympathy to Non Extreme Centrist Biblical Clarity

As a young immigrant in the U.S., I leaned left. I believed the lies. I thought the Republican Party was harsh, and the Democrats cared for people.

But now, after years of living outside the U.S., back in Latin America, I’ve seen the truth: many of the problems we ran from were created by the very ideologies I used to support.

“When the righteous increase, the people rejoice, but when the wicked rule, the people groan.” — Proverbs 29:2

I used to wonder why so many Cuban immigrants in Miami voted Republican. Now I understand. They’ve lived through the nightmare.

At the same time, I want to be very clear: I do not believe in political extremes on either side. And I disagree with today’s Republican leadership in the U.S. when it comes to their harsh, unjust stance on immigration regards to deporting innocent hard working immigrants (NON CRIMINALS) that just want a better life and really escaped from these socialist communist countries to beging with

That position is not biblical. It often lacks compassion, wisdom, and fails to recognize that Jesus Himself was an immigrant and a refugee (Matthew 2:13–15).

“For I was a stranger and you welcomed Me.” — Matthew 25:35
“Do not mistreat or oppress a foreigner, for you were foreigners in Egypt.” — Exodus 22:21

God commands us to treat the foreigner with dignity and fairness, while also upholding justice, order, and rule of law.

“The same law shall apply both to the native and to the foreigner who resides among you.”Exodus 12:49

True biblical immigration policy is neither reckless nor heartless. It is compassion with discernment.

Latin America’s Socialist Disasters

🇨🇺 Cuba

Under Fidel Castro, Cuba went from a thriving economy to an oppressed state. Personal ambition was crushed, churches were harassed, and even today, Cubans live with little freedom.

🇻🇪 Venezuela

Once rich in oil and opportunity, Venezuela was destroyed by socialist leaders like Chávez and Maduro. Nationalization, price controls, and corruption led to hyperinflation, starvation, and mass exodus.

🇳🇮 Nicaragua

Daniel Ortega’s regime silences dissent, jails pastors, and crushes economic growth in the name of “equality.”

These regimes replace God’s order with chaos, and destroy hope for future generations.

Spain: A Surprising Example of Smart Immigration

Though politically left-leaning, Spain has taken a wise, culturally aware approach to immigration, unlike Germany or the UK, where radical Islam has created deep societal fractures.

Instead of opening the floodgates indiscriminately, Spain welcomes Latin Americans, people who already share language, history, and Christian roots. This has led to a win-win: boosting the workforce while preserving social unity.

“A house divided against itself cannot stand.” — Mark 3:25

This isn’t just smart policy. It reflects biblical wisdom. God told Israel to treat foreigners fairly, but also to teach them His laws and values (Exodus 12:49).

Spain shows that immigration can work when it’s grounded in cultural compatibility, moral responsibility, and national identity—not blind inclusion.

“The foreigner… must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself…” — Leviticus 19:34

But only if they come to respect and integrate, not radicalize and destroy.

Bukele and Milei: A New Kind of Leadership

  • 🇸🇻 Nayib Bukele: Has turned El Salvador from the murder capital of the world into one of the safest countries in Latin America. His hardline approach to crime has saved lives and restored order.

El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele has emerged as a decisive and assertive leader, embodying a strong stance against crime and corruption that has resonated across Latin America. His administration’s tough policies have significantly reduced gang violence and crime rates, addressing issues that once gripped the nation and endangered the lives of its citizens.

“Rescue those who are being taken away to death; hold back those who are stumbling to the slaughter.” — Proverbs 24:11

“Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute.” — Psalm 82:3

Bukele’s leadership has introduced sweeping measures to dismantle criminal networks and restore order in areas previously controlled by gangs. This aligns with the biblical role of governing authorities, which is to restrain evil and protect the good.

“For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad… he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God’s wrath on the wrongdoer.” — Romans 13:3–4

Critics, often from left leaning political sectors, raise concerns about human rights implications, especially as his administration employs strict anti gang policies. However, supporters argue that Bukele’s actions address long-standing crises, seeking to provide safer communities and uphold the dignity of law-abiding citizens.

“When justice is done, it is a joy to the righteous but terror to evildoers.” — Proverbs 21:15

“To do righteousness and justice is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.” — Proverbs 21:3

Since 2015, El Salvador’s murder rate has dropped by over 70%—an astounding achievement for a nation that was once considered the world’s homicide capital. This is true, results-driven leadership, not political performance.

Many in Latin America plagued by corruption, crime, extortion, and violence—are now calling for a “Bukele model”: a return to justice, accountability, and bold action to defend the innocent.

“Woe to those who decree iniquitous decrees… to rob the poor of their right, and make the fatherless their prey!” — Isaiah 10:1–2

“By justice a king builds up the land, but he who exacts gifts tears it down.” — Proverbs 29:4

“He does not bear the sword in vain…” — Romans 13:4

  • 🇦🇷 Javier Milei: A libertarian economist now leading Argentina’s battle against socialism. His blunt warnings against the “sh**ty left” echo the frustration of millions robbed by corrupt Peronist policies.

Argentina, once a wealthy nation, has struggled under decades of Peronist policies that prioritize government control and high taxes. Milei, a libertarian economist, advocates for a free market economy and believes in reducing the government’s role to empower individuals. His approach marks a stark shift from the country’s socialist past, offering hope for a prosperous future.

These leaders aren’t perfect, but they’re doing what many won’t: standing up to the failed systems that have enslaved Latin America for decades.

Why Socialism Always Fails

No matter how good it sounds, socialism and communism always end in:

  • Poverty

  • Corruption

  • Dependency

  • Loss of freedom

  • Suppression of faith

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” — John 10:10

Socialist systems steal opportunity, kill ambition, and destroy liberty. That’s not the Spirit of Christ—it’s the spirit of deception.

What Latin America Needs

We don’t need more revolutions. We need repentance, truth, and righteous leadership.

We need:

  • Economic freedom

  • Rule of law

  • Strong borders

  • Protection of life and family

  • Biblical morality

  • Real justice—not class warfare

“Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.” — Proverbs 14:34

Final Thoughts

I once believed the lies of the “left equality”. But by God’s grace, I now see the truth.

Socialism is not compassion. Communism is not justice. These systems are spiritual and social poison.

They promise heaven, but bring hell.
They talk of equality, but enforce tyranny.
They claim to help the poor, but leave everyone poorer.

Only Jesus Christ sets people truly free.

“You shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.” — John 8:32

Closing Scripture

“The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, while the soul of the diligent is richly supplied.” — Proverbs 13:4

Let us not build societies on laziness, envy, or dependence.

Let us build on faith, truth, freedom, work, and responsibility, the biblical way.
