Psalm 127:3 — The Greatest Gift God Entrusts

Introduction: When Life Becomes an Inheritance

There are moments when children feel restless, noisy, exhausting…
but then there are also moments when you stop to look at their face as they sleep,
or listen to a word they say,
and your soul understands: this little being is a miracle.

Motherhood — or the desire to become a mother — isn’t always a smooth path.
But this verse reminds us of something deep:
God sees children not as a burden, but as a gift.
Not as just another responsibility, but as an inheritance.
Not as an accident, but as a sacred trust.

Let’s take a slow, thoughtful look at this promise —
to rediscover God’s heart when He thinks about children.

The Verse (NIV)

“Children are a heritage from the LORD, offspring a reward from him.”
Psalm 127:3 (NIV)

Before We Understand It… Let’s Set the Scene

This psalm is attributed to Solomon — a king who knew what it meant to build:
cities, kingdoms, and temples.
But he also knew that no labor matters without the Lord’s blessing.

Amid a psalm about work and protection, this radiant truth appears:
children are not something we build — they are something we receive.
Not as a result of human merit, but as an act of divine generosity.

Word-by-Word Breakdown

Sometimes, a single word can shift our entire perspective.
So let’s pause and look closely at each phrase —
not to study with the mind, but to listen with the heart
to what God meant from the beginning, with intention, tenderness, and love.

“Children…”

Hebrew: בָּנִים (banim)

  • Banim — “children, descendants, future generations”

    This goes beyond babies.
It speaks of legacy, the unfolding of God’s story through new lives.
They are part of something bigger.

“are a heritage from the LORD…”

Hebrew: נַחֲלַת יְהוָה (nachalat Adonai)

  • Nachalat — “heritage, inherited treasure, entrusted legacy”

  • Adonai — “the Lord”

This isn’t something we earn or demand.
It’s something God hands over like a family heirloom — to be treasured, protected, and enjoyed.

“offspring…”

Hebrew: פְּרִי־הַבָּטֶן (pri ha-baten)

  • Pri ha-baten — “fruit of the womb,” literally those born from within

A beautiful and deep image:
children as fruit, a living blessing that springs from the body but originates in heaven.

“a reward.”

Hebrew: שָׂכָר (sachar)

  • Sachar — “reward, gift, compensation”

Not as payment for work,
but as an expression of God’s favor and love.

So What Is This Verse Really Saying?

“Children are a heritage from the LORD, offspring a reward from him.”

Children are not property.
Not a burden.
Not a coincidence.

They are a personal gift from God.
A legacy He lets us care for for a time — with tenderness and responsibility.

And while the world may see them as a problem, an expense, or an inconvenience,
God sees them as an eternal treasure.

And as with every truth that comes from the heart of God,
Scripture confirms and echoes it throughout the Bible.

Because children — whether biological, adopted, or spiritual —
have always been part of God’s plan of blessing.

Concordance with Other Passages

Deuteronomy 7:13

“He will love you and bless you and increase your numbers. He will bless the fruit of your womb…”

Children are part of the package of blessings that come from God’s love.

Genesis 33:5

“These are the children God has graciously given your servant.”

Jacob acknowledges that his children were not his achievement, but a divine gift.

Mark 10:14

“Let the little children come to me… for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.”

Jesus valued children deeply and placed them at the heart of His kingdom.

Final Reflection

Psalm 127:3 invites us to look at children through heaven’s eyes.

Not as a disruption to our plans,
but as the continuation of God’s plan on earth.

Not as a burden that drains us,
but as a reward that shapes us.

Whether they are biological or spiritual,
young children in your home or youth in your care —
God is entrusting you with something sacred.

Are You Valuing the Life God Has Placed in Your Hands?

Can you see children the way He sees them: heritage and reward?

You can pray today:

“Lord, thank you for the life you’ve entrusted to me.
Help me to care, guide, and love the way You do.
Make me a faithful steward of this inheritance that comes from You.
Amen.”
