Living in a world filled with violence, crime, and uncertainty can be overwhelming. It’s natural to feel fear when you constantly hear of killings, corruption, and danger all around you. Especially when you live in a country that has corrupt governments which don’t help but are part of the problem. This can be a drain for citizen’s to constantly watch on the news horrible stories of criminals taking control of the streets and commiting horrible acts to innocent people.
But as Christians, we are not powerless — God has given us authority, protection, and strength to overcome fear and stand firm in His promises.
One of the most powerful verses to hold onto in times of fear is Luke 10:19:
“Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.”
This verse is not just poetic words — it is a declaration of the authority that Christ has given us over the forces of evil, including the wickedness we see in the world today. Let’s dive deep into this verse and other powerful scriptures that will help conquer fear, walk in authority, and trust in God’s protection.
1. Understanding Luke 10:19 — Our Authority in Christ
In Luke 10:19, Jesus is speaking to His disciples after they returned from preaching the Gospel, casting out demons, and healing the sick. They were amazed that even demons were subject to them in Jesus’ name (Luke 10:17).
Jesus confirms their authority, saying:
“Behold, I give unto you power (authority) to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.”
What Does This Mean?
- “I give unto you power” — This is not just any power, but authority (Greek: exousia), meaning the legal right and power to act.
- “To tread on serpents and scorpions” — These represent spiritual and physical dangers, including demonic forces, evil people, murderers, demons, etc.. and even fear itself.
- “Over all the power of the enemy” — This means that Satan, criminals, murderers, etc.. or any danger you face do not have ultimate control over you.
- “Nothing shall by any means hurt you” — This is a declaration of divine protection. Even in the midst of danger, God is your shield.
Declaration: “I have authority in Christ! No evil power can rule over me, and nothing shall harm me in Jesus’ name!”
For us Christians, it is important to realize that the Lord Almighty, Jesus Christ, has given us His divine authority, just as He did to the disciples when He sent them out to preach the Gospel and cast out demons. This authority is not based on our own strength, but on His power working through us.
Jesus also instructed His followers to be “as wise as serpents and as gentle as doves” (Matthew 10:16). This means we must have discernment and awareness of the enemy’s tactics, yet remain pure in heart, acting with love and righteousness. We are called to walk in boldness, but never in pride — to stand firm against darkness while reflecting Christ’s compassion. True spiritual authority is exercised with humility, wisdom, and unwavering faith in God’s power.

This is something that we have to realize, Fear is not from God. This is the enemies tool against us. There is not one Bible verse that mentions the Lord has given us fear or wants us to live in fear. Fear is not for us as Christians as mentioned in 2 Timonthy by the Apostle Paul.
2 Timothy 1:7 — Fear is NOT from God
