The other day I had a horrible nightmare, seemingly out of nowhere. In this dream, I was part of a gruesome, horrific, and violent murder scene — and I was the one committing the act. It was disturbing and sickening. I’ve never been a violent person neither would ever have these horrible tendencies or wish them to anyone (now even more so as a Christian), so waking up from that dream left me deeply shaken and confused. I mentioned this dream to my wife and I thought that I might have been under attack possibly.
Coincidentally, I used to watch horror movies before I was a Christian since I was a kid as young as 6 years of age, having grown up in the 80’s and 90’s, I loved horror flicks about vampires, haunted houses, Dracula, monsters, etc.. I never knew how much I was completely desensitized of all of this bad material until I became a Christian. This as a Christian I know now is part of the enemy’s plan to make people consume this material like water with music, movies, art, etc.. in everyday culture, now even more so today especially, it is worse.
I do not consume this content anymore now as a Christian and don’t care to consume that material anymore. Though unfortunately, I have come across some popular horror content online not by my own choice, but actually through Apologetics that I study online and watch everday on YouTube that a lot of these guys that I watch a lot for some reason now have decided to expose a popula horror movie which is very anti Christian. I understand the intent but still, I don’t this they should even show any scenes of this kind of material because it exposes us to bad content created by the enemy to tempt us and bother us.
While I never enjoyed the gory or violent parts of watching horror movies when I was a kid, I now realize how those seeds might still be lodged in the mind now still even after even exposing myself as a Christian to this content— and now how the enemy can exploit that.
This experience reminded me that spiritual attacks often come subtly and unexpectedly, especially in our thoughts and dreams. As a Christian, I believe it’s essential not just to recognize these attacks but to actively resist them with the Word of God and to not let it affect you with fear as it did to me and I asked myself, why on God’s earth would I ever have these horrible dreams or even thoughts?
Here are strong Bible verses that I now use as spiritual weapons — spoken out loud — especially before sleep:
2 Corinthians 10:5 (NIV)
“We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”
Psalm 4:8 (NIV)
“In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.”
Psalm 91:5, 9–11 (NIV)
“You will not fear the terror of night… If you say, ‘The Lord is my refuge,’ and you make the Most High your dwelling, no harm will overtake you… For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.”
Isaiah 26:3 (NIV)
“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.”
2 Timothy 1:7 (NIV)
“For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.”
Ephesians 6:11 (NIV)
“Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.”
James 4:7 (NIV)
“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
Proverbs 3:24 (NIV)
“When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.”
Philippians 4:7–8 (NIV)
“And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus… whatever is pure, whatever is lovely… think about such things.”
When disturbing dreams or thoughts come, I rebuke them in the name of Jesus Christ. I claim the authority He has given His people, and I use Scripture as my defense. The enemy may try to use fear, shame, or confusion — but the Word of God is clear:
“The one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world” (1 John 4:4, NIV).
Christian, don’t let these attacks go unanswered. Speak the Word, pray, and remind yourself that you are covered by the blood of Jesus. His peace is greater than any nightmare.
