Introduction: The World Measures You by Productivity — Jesus Never Did
Our culture says:
-
“You matter if you earn money.”
-
“Your value is in your job.”
-
“Productivity equals worth.”
But Jesus never taught that.
In Scripture, identity is rooted in who you are in God, not in what you produce for society, the job you have, your title, how much you have in your bank account, working 9 to 5.
God never commanded anyone to “be valuable by earning a salary.”
He commanded us to be faithful, obedient, and devoted to His purposes.
So what is “work” in the eyes of Jesus?
Let’s build this from Scripture — especially correcting the misunderstanding around 2 Thessalonians 3:6–15.
1. “Work” in the Bible Does Not Mean “Paid Employment”
Scripture uses two major words for “work”:
Hebrew: Avodah
Meaning: worship, service, purpose, responsibility.
Greek: Ergon
Meaning: good works, obedience, mission, fruit.
These words never mean:
“salary”
“earning power”
“productivity”
“output”
Work, in God’s vocabulary, is:
-
faithfulness
-
obedience
-
stewardship
-
service
-
purpose
-
responsibility
Work is spiritual before it is ever financial.
2. Jesus Worked Without Pay — Yet His Work Was the Holiest of All
Jesus spent:
-
30 years in obscurity
-
3 years preaching, healing, discipling
-
0 years receiving a paycheck
Did God ever say:
-
“You’re not working”?
-
“You need income to be valuable”?
-
“You’re behind in life”?
Never.
Jesus said:
“My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me.”
— John 4:34
Obedience = work.
Not salary.
Not productivity.
Not earning power.
3. The Disciples Left Their Careers, and Jesus Called Their Ministry “Work”
Peter left fishing.
Matthew left tax collecting.
James and John left their nets.
They received:
-
no salary
-
no benefits
-
no job security
Yet Jesus said:
“The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.”
— Matthew 9:37
Workers — with no income.
This shows:
Work in Scripture = Kingdom responsibility, not economic output.
4. What About The Bible Verse, “If You Don’t Work, You Don’t Eat”?
Understanding 2 Thessalonians 3:6–15 Correctly**
This is one of the most misunderstood passages in the Bible.
People often quote:
“If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat.”
— 2 Thess. 3:10
But they ignore the context.
Key word: “NOT WILLING.”
Not “unable.”
Not “in transition.”
Not “raising a home.”
Not “serving in ministry.”
Not “between jobs.”
Not “working for God without pay.”
Paul is addressing a specific sinful behavior:
People in the church who REFUSED to work, though they could.
They were:
-
meddling in other people’s lives
-
causing disorder
-
being a burden on others
-
creating division
-
acting irresponsibly
-
refusing to contribute in any meaningful way
-
using spirituality as an excuse to avoid responsibility
Paul was correcting rebellion, not seasonal unemployment.
✔ He was rebuking laziness, not ministry
✔ He was dealing with irresponsibility, not unpaid service
✔ He was addressing disorder, not people doing God’s work
To apply this passage to a believer who is:
-
building a ministry
-
supporting a spouse or taking care of kids
-
spreading, preaching, teaching the Gospel (as we are commanded to do so – 2 Timothy 4-1 3)
-
serving God daily
-
in a season of transition or “unemployment”
…is not only incorrect — it is spiritually abusive and theologically wrong.
5. If “Work = Salary,” Then the Entire Bible Falls Apart
If God defined work as “earning money,” then…
-
Jesus didn’t work
-
Paul was irresponsible
-
The disciples were freeloaders
-
Prophets were “unproductive”
-
Widows who served were useless
-
Churches that supported missionaries were enabling laziness
-
Ministry would be “not work” unless someone paid you
This is absurd.
Work in Scripture is measured by faithfulness, not by finances.
6. What Jesus Calls “Work” Is Often Invisible to the World
Jesus sees work in things the world ignores:
-
building your home (Prov. 14:1)
-
serving others in secret (Matt. 6:4–6)
-
praying faithfully
-
studying the Word
-
ministering to one person
-
comforting the hurting
-
creating biblical content
-
discipling a friend
-
worship
-
obedience
-
perseverance
This is ERGON — “good works, fruitfulness.”
What the world calls “nothing,” Jesus calls work.
7. Work Is Defined by Heaven, Not by Earth
Earth asks:
-
“How much do you earn?”
-
“What’s your job title?”
-
“How productive are you?”
Heaven asks:
-
“Were you faithful?”
-
“Did you obey My calling?”
-
“Did you use the gifts I gave you?”
-
“Did you serve in love?”
-
“Did you honor My Kingdom?”
Heaven does not measure:
– income
– career level
– job stability
– financial security
Heaven measures:
✔ obedience
✔ faithfulness
✔ integrity
✔ stewardship
✔ spiritual fruit
✔ love
✔ sacrifice
✔ mission
8. For Those Who Feel Guilty About “Not Earning”
If you feel:
-
guilty
-
“like a burden”
-
insecure
-
“behind”
-
fearful
-
unproductive
-
“not working”
Hear this with spiritual authority NOW, especially for those who have been attacked by others living in the world and there value is in “work” for the world not the good fruits of the Lord Jesus Christ, lack opportunities, feel down because the world blinds us with lies, accusations, abuse, purposely created by the God of the World, the devil to make us think our worth is in making money which is common in many countries that promote wordly living and not Christ like good works.
Your value is NOT in income — your value is in Jesus Christ.
You are doing holy work when you:
-
serve, care for your loved ones / family
-
Spread, teach the Gospel
-
study Scripture
-
grow spiritually
-
support your home
-
build a ministry
-
pray for others
-
heal emotionally
-
walk in obedience
This is the kind of work Jesus sees.
“Your labor in the Lord is not in vain.”
— 1 Corinthians 15:58
9. The Biblical Conclusion:
Work = Obedience and Faithfulness, Not Money**
Here is the Christ-centered definition of work:
Work is anything done in faith, obedience, and responsibility for the glory of God.
2 Thessalonians 3:6–15 corrects:
-
laziness
-
disorder
-
abuse of others’ generosity
NOT:
-
ministry
-
homemaking
-
unpaid seasons
-
transitions
-
Studying God’s word
-
Spreading the Gospel
-
serving God without pay
-
building a spiritual calling
-
supporting your spouse
-
doing Kingdom work
Your obedience is work.
Your service is work.
Your ministry is work.
Your faithfulness is work.
And Jesus sees it.
Conclusion:
What You Do for God Is Real Work — Even If the World Doesn’t Understand**
If you want to know how Jesus defines work:
Work = Doing the will of God.
No salary required.
No productivity needed.
No job title necessary.
Scripture also warns actually that “the love of money is the root of all evil “– 1 Timothy 6-10
So it would be wrong and completely condradictive of Gods word to validate “work” from something he himself calls the root of all evil, think about it.
One day, Jesus will NOT say:
-
“Well paid, good and successful worker.”
He will say – Matthew 25-23:
“Well done, good and faithful servant.”
And that is the only validation that matters, through JESUS CHRIST, NOT THE WORLD.
PS: As a bonus we added here a beautiful inspirational song we created and hope you like all about Colossians 3:23, “Do it for the Lord”, enjoy!
