Why study the life of Daniel?
When the world pressures us to abandon our values…
When the culture demands that we give in or stay silent…
We need to remember Daniel.
Daniel was taken from his land, separated from his family, forced to live in a pagan culture… yet he never lost his identity as a child of God.
Studying his life teaches us that faithfulness to God doesn’t depend on where we are—but on who we are inside.

What was happening in the world during Daniel’s lifetime?
Daniel was taken captive to Babylon during the first deportation of Judah (605 B.C.) under King Nebuchadnezzar.
Babylon was the most powerful empire of the time, advanced in architecture, astronomy, and law.
Later, the Medo-Persian Empire rose and became the backdrop of Daniel’s continued ministry.
Elsewhere in the world:
- Egypt was ruled by the 26th Dynasty
- In India, the foundations of Vedic religion were being established
- In China, the Zhou dynasty was nearing its end
- In the Americas, Olmec and Chavín cultures were flourishing in art and society
In this multicultural world ruled by idols and absolute monarchs, Daniel shined without compromising his faith.
Why is Daniel important in the Bible?
Because he was:
- Faithful in both small and great things
- A young man who chose not to defile himself with the king’s food (Daniel 1:8)
- A man who interpreted dreams and visions that no one else could
- A model administrator, free of corruption and negligence (Daniel 6:4)
- A prophet who saw visions of the world’s future and God’s eternal Kingdom
His writings include key prophecies essential to understanding the story of redemption—many of which were quoted by Jesus Himself (Matthew 24:15).

What was his position in society?
Daniel was taken to Babylon as a slave…
But God raised him up as a governor, a wise man, and a royal advisor.
He served under at least four kings: Nebuchadnezzar, Belshazzar, Darius, and Cyrus.
Though far from home, he never lost his loyalty to heaven.
What was his personality like?
Daniel was:
- Resolved and pure: He chose not to defile himself (Daniel 1:8)
- Wise and prudent: He responded with discernment, not anger
- Faithful in prayer: He prayed three times a day—even when it cost him the lion’s den (Daniel 6:10)
- Courageous: He didn’t bow to human decrees
- Humble: He always gave glory to God, never to himself (Daniel 2:28)
He was firm, but not aggressive; wise, but not prideful—an example of integrity without fanaticism, spirituality without arrogance.

Why will he always be remembered?
Because he was:
- A faithful young man in a time of pressure
- An elder full of vision and hope
- A leader who kept his faith, no matter who sat on the throne
Daniel will be remembered as the man who prayed with his windows open toward Jerusalem, even knowing he was being watched…
Because his loyalty didn’t depend on circumstances.
What can we learn from him?
- That we can remain faithful even in a world hostile to God
- That personal holiness is non-negotiable when we love the Lord
- That prayer is the secret to a powerful life
- That God honors those who honor Him, even in foreign lands
- That those who persevere will see God’s glory, even if it comes late in life

Key Passage
“Since the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to them.”
— Daniel 10:12 (NIV)
What was his relationship with God like?
Deep, reverent, and intimate.
Daniel wasn’t a prophet known for public speeches…
But he spoke daily with God in private.
He fasted, prayed, and interceded for his people (Daniel 9).
He received powerful visions, even of the glorified Christ (Daniel 7).
He was strengthened by angels and by God’s own presence.
His spiritual life didn’t depend on the temple…
but on a heart surrendered to the Most High.

What would Daniel do today?
He would stand firm in his convictions without raising his voice to seek attention.
He would pray in secret.
He would serve with excellence.
And when the test comes, he would open the windows toward heaven without fear…
Because he knows his God is faithful.
Prayer
Lord, give me Daniel’s heart—
A heart that does not defile, does not give up, and cannot be corrupted.
Teach me to pray like him,
To live with integrity like him,
And to trust that You are with me… even in the lion’s den.
Amen.
