While walking past a well-known bookstore during the Mother’s Day season, I stopped to look at their front window display with my wife. Dozens of books, colorful and full of emotional messages, were proudly showcased. But as I examined the content with spiritual discernment, what I saw was deeply troubling: a clear and growing spiritual deception in our modern culture.
God without Christ. Faith without the Cross. False Light in Plain Sight.
One book caught my eye:
“New Scientific Evidence of the Existence of God” by José Carlos González-Hurtado. As a committed Evangelical Protestant Christian, I initially hoped it might be similar to books by Lee Strobel or J. Warner Wallace — books that defend the Christian faith with clarity and boldness. I bought it with that expectation. Also with the excitement as there is finally a book on God and Apologetics which you never see in book stores but instead nothing but pure secular material far from anything remotely Christian.

But what I found was deeply disappointing unfortunately in this book as well.
This book talks about “God,” yes — and references scientific discoveries in physics, biology, and mathematics to argue for a “Creator.” But it never once connects that Creator to Jesus Christ. There is no mention of His life, His sacrificial death, or His victorious resurrection. The gospel is completely absent.
Jesus is nowhere in this book.
And that’s no small issue.
To present a generic god without Jesus Christ is to open the door to every false religion under the sun.
Jesus Christ is God — Period.
John 14:6 says:
“I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
No amount of scientific evidence can replace the foundational truth that Jesus is the fullness of God revealed (Colossians 1:15–20).
Defending the idea of “God” without declaring who God actually is — the Lord Jesus Christ — is not Christian apologetics. It’s theistic humanism at best, and spiritual compromise at worst.
Clear Catholic Influence and Criticism of Evangelicals
As I continued reading, I discovered something else even more disturbing.
On page 383 of the book, the author openly criticizes evangelical Protestant Christianity. He refers to evangelical creationists (those who believe in a literal six-day creation and the authority of Scripture) in a tone that is dismissive and intellectually superior. He separates himself from what he calls the “dogmatism” of evangelicals and appears to ridicule belief in the biblical account of creation as held by many faithful Christians.

This clearly reveals the author’s position:
He is not neutral — he speaks from a Roman Catholic worldview, and one that seems to undermine biblical Protestantism.
And it shows. The book promotes a philosophical argument for a Creator, but without:
- Jesus Christ
- The gospel
- Biblical authority
- The resurrection
- Salvation by grace through faith
In other words: it’s not Christian in the biblical sense.
The Bookstore Itself: A Showcase of Deception
Looking back at the display, it all made sense.
Surrounding that book were:
- Books on the Pope and Roman Catholicism, with no gospel in sight.
- Books on witchcraft, tarot, astrology, and New Age spirituality — unashamedly displayed.
- Books promoting self-deification, like “The Power Is Within You” or “Awaken Your Inner Energy.”
This wasn’t just a neutral book display — it was a spiritual battleground.

“Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness.” — Isaiah 5:20
My Response as a Bible-Believing Christian
As an Evangelical Protestant follower of Jesus Christ, I will not stay silent.
- I will continue to defend the true gospel.
- I will read with discernment — including this book — to expose false teaching.
- I will encourage other believers to test every spirit, and not to accept any “God” that is not Jesus Christ.
“For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form.” — Colossians 2:9
“There is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” — Acts 4:12
Any teaching that speaks of God without Christ is false. Any gospel without the resurrection is powerless. Any “truth” without Scripture is a lie.
There is one true God. He has a name. His name is Jesus Christ.
And we will not be ashamed to proclaim it.
